"HOW MANY WORDS DID YOU WRITE TODAY?"
A NaNoWriMo Journal

A blog of the agony and ecstasy experienced while attempting to write a fifty thousand word novel in thirty days.  I did mention agony, didn't I ?

Hey kids, what time is it?  Right you are! November is almost here so it must be NaNo Time!

National Novel Writing Month is bearing down on us at breakneck speed.  This year I'm not going to keep my misery to myself, I plan to share all of my ups and downs.  But, in the interest of fair play and so no one is forced to read depressing posts if they don't want to, I will mark each post with a clearly defined scale of joy or misery; success or failure; agony or ecstasy.
See you on November 1st!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

AND NOW, MAY I INTRODUCE THE DUXBURY WINE SCALE  (patent pending):
Picture
ONE WINE GLASS:     One glass is a perfectly respectable reward for the day.  It means I made my minimum word count (1,667) and the words did not totally suck or so I will tell myself...repeatedly yet unconvincingly.
TWO WINE GLASSES:    This is my reward for a really good (but not great!) writing day.  I've met the minimum word count with a little extra to boot and darn it I deserve my treat.
Picture
Picture
THREE WINE GLASSES:    This is reserved for those days when not only have I exceeded the minimum word count but every word is a treasure.  I am a genius!  My prose is perfection and my story has no plot holes.  Needless to say, there probably won't be many of these days but never say never.

THE DREADED EMPTY GLASS:    The empty glass means I did not make my word count for the day.  . Must I say it out loud?  No words, No wine!         Yes, I know it is pretty glass but I figure if I'm going to wallow in pity I should allow myself a little beauty to make up for the shame.
Picture
THE WHOLE DAMN BOTTLE:     Agony or ecstasy, this one is a toss up.  Could be I wrote half my novel in a day or I accidentally hit delete and lost the whole thing.  You'll just have wait and see.

Great post. At the end of November will you tell us how many bottles you went through?

Wonderful idea. I shall use your scale from here on out. In fact, as NaNoWriMo approaches, I'd better get to the bulk liquor store to stock up on wine myself! What's your favorite writing wine? I always like something dry, always red.

I usually stick to red. For bulk wine the Black Box Wines boxed Malbec is pretty darned tasty! But if the weather is nice, and November in Houston usually is, I'll take a nice chilled Pinot Grigio for sipping on the patio at the end of a long day.

Wish I was back in Italy. I never tried the bulk wines while I was there but I'll do it next time!

Absolutely love your website: the stormy header and visualizing you in the arms of Travis McGee. I was one of Travis' Girls too! Wishing you the best as you NaNo. I've never finished. I get to 28,000 words and crash for Thanksgiving. :)

Thanks Jess, good to meet another one of Travis' girls. Thanksgiving is a real problem but I usually manage to stockpile an extra day's worth of words during the first week so I can enjoy the holiday.

Hi Cherley,
I'm glad you're taking the plunge into NaNo! I'm not sure if you'll hear back from them (it has been so long since I first signed up I've forgotten) I think you can just go on the website and start setting up all your information. My name on NaNo is Dux. Let me know what name you use and we can tag each other as Writing Buddies or just come back here and commiserate.
